Charles E. Barber was part of a father-son tandem that served consecutive terms as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. William Barber was the 5th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and, upon his death in 1870, was succeeded by his son Charles as the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States. Charles E. Barber would hold the position for 37 years until his own death in 1917, leaving behind the Barber Coinage Series as one of his seminal achievements.
