While its exact origins are not known, many scholars believe the Aztec Calendar Stone was carved between 1502 and 1521. The stone was later buried in Mexico City, where it remained hidden until 1790 when workmen uncovered it. Today, this majestic stone is on display at the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. Now, you can buy 1/2 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds online at Provident Metals.

Round Highlights:

  • Arrives inside a flip, a tube of 20, or a box of 500 rounds!
  • Stunning new round depicting the Aztec Calendar Stone!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 fine silver.
  • The obverse field depicts The Aztec Calendar Stone.
  • On the reverse side of the coin is Cuauhtmoc, an Aztec ruler.

When you purchase 1/2 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds from Provident Metals, they will arrive to you in new condition from Golden State Mint (GSM). Single rounds come in protective plastic flips, while multiples of 20 are shipped in tubes. If you choose to order 500 rounds, they will come in a box.

Obverse

The Aztec Calendar Stone is depicted on the obverse of 1/2 oz Aztec Calendar Rounds. At the center of this ornate design is what scholars suspect is the sun deity Tonatiuh. He would be the fifth and final solar god in Aztec culture. The square blocks around this depiction represent the previous sun deities. You will also see a band surrounding these that features 20 signs from the sacred Aztec Calendar. This is a fascinating work of art that pieces much of Aztec cosmology into a cohesive whole.

Reverse

Cuauhtmoc is depicted on the reverse of 1/2 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds. This is a fitting portrait for this round since Cuauhtmoc was the final Aztec emperor before his people were destroyed by the Spanish Conquest. Youll see the inscription CUAUHTEMOC below the portrait. Inscribed around the rim are the words HALF TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER.

History

The Aztecs were a people who ruled the areas of central and southern Mexico from roughly 1345 to 1521. Similar to the Maya tribe before them, the Aztecs developed a spectacular civilization with a highly developed culture. Scholars today compare some of their temples and palaces to the pyramids in terms of sheer size and sophistication. However, some of these temples were used for human sacrifice, which tarnishes the reputation of the Aztecs somewhat. The Aztecs survived until the early 1500s, when Spanish conquistador Cortes wiped them out, paving the way for the Mexico we know today.
