Obverse

On the obverse side of 1/10 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds, you will find the right-profile portrait of a Native American figure. The stoic indigenous figure has braided hair with a feather woven into it and is accompanied on this side by an inscription of Liberty. According to James Earle Fraser, this design was originally created using three Native American leaders of the early 20th century as inspiration for the appearance.

Reverse

The reverse face of 1/10 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds includes an American bison. Fraser used Black Diamond as inspiration for his buffalo design. Black Diamond was a resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the early 20th century. The largest land mammal in North America, the bison is depicted here in left-profile relief standing on a mound of dirt. Inscriptions here include Golden State Mint and 1/10 Troy oz .999 Silver.

History

James Earle Frasers Buffalo Nickel design debuted in 1913 from the United States Mint and remained in production through 1938. The new nickel design came at a time when the US Mint was modernizing all of its major circulation coins. The Buffalo Nickel was significant as it was the first major coin design for American currency that included imagery honoring Native Americans.
