The 1885 release of the Morgan Silver Dollar holds a special place in history due to its production at four different US Mint locations and the end of a significant minting streak. From 1878 to 1885, Morgan Dollars were struck each year at four branch mints. After 1885, this would only occur four more times between 1889 and 1904, with a final run in 1921. Obverse
Lady Liberty graces the obverse side of the 1885-S Morgan Dollar. Designed by George T. Morgan, this portrait shows Liberty in left-profile with a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and coronet crown. Thirteen stars frame her image on this side of the coin. Inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1885.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1885-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features the heraldic eagle. This design, also by George T. Morgan, showcases a bald eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch, representing war and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
In 1885, Morgan Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, Carson City Mint, and San Francisco Mint. The closure of the Carson City Mint from 1886 to 1888 meant that only three mints would produce these coins over the next three years. This marked the end of a continuous four-mint production streak that briefly resumed from 1889 to 1893.
